April 21, 2011 Southern Eagles
Squadron Meeting Minutes
Leesburg Community Center
The meeting was called to order by President Bob Durst at 7 PM. Twenty three members were present.
- Minutes of the last meeting were approved as presented.
- The Treasurer's report was given and approved as presented.
- Membership chairman Gene Davis reported 128 paid members for 2011.
- Cigarette butts have been found at the flying field on a
regular basis. Smoking anywhere at the field except in your vehicle is
prohibited by the agreement with Lake county. Violation of this rule
could cause the lost of the flying field for all of us.
- Gate locking still seems to be a problem. If you open the
gate, leave the lock unlocked, but spin the code wheels so the
combination is not showing. If you are the last person out of the gate,
then you must close the gates and lock them using the chain and lock. A
new brass lock belonging to the Progress Energy has been attached to
the end of the chain. When locking up, wrap the chain around both gates
and then put our lock thru the brass lock and the other end of the
chain. At a later date, the brass lock may be moved to the center of
the chain. When that happens, then just put our lock thru both ends of
the chain.
- The replacement ramp for the lawn mower container was
discussed. A new cement ramp will be built and several cement weights
will be formed to anchor down the porta potty. The cost is not to
exceed $500. The porta potty will be moved to higher ground to allow
easier access during wet weather.
- It was reported that a neighbor from the West (Sunshower
Street) came to the flying field and complained that there was a big
noisy plane flying over his house. This is far outside the bounderies
of the flying field. Flying club rules prohibit flying outside of the
field bounderies and over the recycling operation. The flying club is
currently in negotiations with the County over several projects that
the club wants. And the county will shortly be assigning a new employee
to oversee the land fill complex. Now is a very bad time to have
neighbors complain that our club is causing a safety and noise problem.
- A club member who was observed flying outside of the flying
field bounderies became upset when he was told about his flying
infraction. There is a very clearly marked map of the flying field and
it’s bounderies in the display case under the canopy. All club members
should be aware of and abide by these rules.
- A contractor will provide a quote to add some dirt to low
spots on the North/South runway and for smoothing the ruts on and add
crushed stone to the driveway.
- Russ Gilgen presented a rough draft of the reworded club
safety rules. Several changes were discussed and agreed upon. The
updates will be voted on at the next Club meeting.
- The Pear Park Flyers have received their AMA charter.
- The annual Club picnic was held on April 2, 2011. It was a fun
day with good weather, good food and many members and their families
enjoying themselves.
- An old damaged work station has been
converted into an engine breakin station and moved near the mower
storage shed. Don Baisden & Mickey Murphy built a new work station
to replace the damaged one.
- Several new fabric taxi ways were installed. After much
discussion, it was decided that the fabric runway is primarily for
electric planes and glow powered planes with small wheels. Larger
gas/fuel planes can use the taxi ways and fabric runway to cross to the
grass area just to the North of the fabric runway for takeoffs and
landings then cross the fabric again when returning to the pits.
- Bob Durst said progress is being made on bringing electrical
service to the field. The County has given preliminary approval.
Permits are needed before work can begin. Bob and several other members
have spent many hours moving this project forward.
- Volunteers are needed for the pylon race scheduled at our SES
field on Saturday August 20th. Contact Don Neal, Pratt Carter or Bob
Durst to offer your help.
The meeting was adjorned at 8:03 PM
A presentation and show and tell on new electronics, controls
and Led lighting for existing model planes and Tri-coptors (a new type
3 motor 3 prop flying machine) was presented by John Bernard.
Respectfully submitted by Wayne Roethler Secretary
